The 50 mile and 55Km course has been changed this year (2010) due to timber sale activity that occurs elsewhere in Capitol Forest. We have changed the course to completely avoid all the logging activities. The course is almost entirely an out and back with a few smaller loops. Both the 50 mile and 55Km will start off the same on the Green Line #6 trail. At about 11 miles, you will take a right on the C-line Road (a partly paved/gravel road) for about 1.4 miles. Then taking the Mt Molly Motorbike Trail up the NE side of Capitol Peak. The 50 mile course climbs up Capitol Peak towers twice. The first climb up Capitol Peak (along with the 55Km'ers) will climb up the Mt Molly Trail and the steep Capitol Peak grunt trail (a steep rocky trail that climbs about 1,000 feet in less than a mile to the towers).
The 55k, after A4, will turn right on C-4000 Road and get onto the Motor Bike trail #30 and descent down on Mt Molly Trail and eventually return on the same trail to the finish.
The 50 mile, after A4, will continues on the ridge (Green Line Trail #6 and Trail #30) to Wedekind. There is a small 4 mile loop the 50 miler will do beyond Wedekind, which includes about 2 miles of road. The 2nd climb up Capitol Peak will be back tracking back up to the towers. The only difference on the descent, you won't run down the steep grunt trail, you will run down the switch back trail just below the towers and take the motorbike #30 trail that switchbacks down to the Mt Molly Trail. Where the Mt Molly Trail loops junctions with the bottom of the grunt trail, at this point you will return to the finish the same as the start.
Overall elevation gain for the 50 mile is approximately 6,000 feet. The 55k is about 4,500 feet. The elevation above sea level varies between 300 feet and at 2,659 feet on top of Capitol Peak. The course has 90% single track hiking and horse trails throughout Capitol State Forest. Terrain is generally rolling in between the major climbs and descents, and in some small portions with steep rocky or muddy conditions. There are also great views on a clear day of Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens, and other Cascade Volcanoes on a clear day!
Camping is available at Mima Falls Campground on a first come basis. Please park in designated areas and only park on gravel areas and not in grass or in vegetated areas! NO OTHER CAMPGROUND IS OPEN IN CAPITOL FOREST!
The cut-off time is 7:00 pm, so take advantage
of the early start if you think you will take more then 13 hours.
Registration opens at 4:30 a.m.
Crew/Spectator's: See Crew Directions
Rules for Crew:
1) Absolutely no speeding while driving to aid stations.
2) No crewing at any point along the course, except at designated aid stations. This is especially important along the C-Line Road, where runners will be running along.
3) Park along side of the road without blocking the road and especially do not block any trails that the course is following. The course will be marked with orange flagging and white arrow markers.
4) At aid stations, please crew your runner off the side and not at the aid station table. Please pick up your trash and throw it away at the aid station.
You are welcome to help volunteer at an aid station while waiting for your runners.
